Burning Piles

If piles will be burned, they shall be ignited using a pattern that allows animals to escape the fire. For example, light the pile from the top, leaving the bottom perimeter unignited to serve as an escape route. Slash or debris piles located within 300 feet of occupied toad meadows should be burned in the fall to minimize impacts to terrestrial habitats and spring dispersal of adult toads. If burning needs to occur in the spring, additional site-specific measures will be developed to ensure maximum protection of individual toads that may be in the area.
